Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor Announced

Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor

Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor, a new title set in the Lord of the Rings universe, is in development for Xbox One,  Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC, publisher Warner Bros. announced.

The third-person action title will not be based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s books but instead will be a completely original story that takes place in between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Players will take on the role of Talion, a ranger who returns to Mordor only to see his family slain by series antagonist Sauron. In shock, Talion takes his own life but he is revived by a vengeful spirit and given supernatural Wrath abilities. Gamers will then take Talion on a revenge mission as he attempts to take down the people that wronged him. Along the way, Talion learns the truth about the spirit that resurrected him and discovers the origins of the Rings of Power.

Developer Monolith Productions promises Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor will deliver a dark story of revenge in a dynamic world where gamers will constantly be forced to deal with the consequences of their actions. Enemy relationships and characteristics will be based on player actions through the game’s Nemesis System.

Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor will deliver a unique experience to every player as battles, enemies and rewards will all be the result of player choices.

Fans of Lord of the Rings lore will be happy to know Monolith is staying true to franchise canon. The development team is working with Middle-earth Enterprises, Peter Jackson, who directed the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, and artists at Weta Workshop to ensure the story, characters and locations are all authentic to the series.

No release information was announced for the game. It is not likely to hit shelves until late 2014 or 2015.
