[adsense250itp]Microsoft has acquired the rights to the Gears of War franchise from Epic Games, the company announced.
The move will ensure that all future titles in the Gears of War universe are exclusive to Microsoft platforms.
Microsoft said Vancouver-based studio Black Tusk Studio will work on the next installment of the franchise. The studio was formerly known as Microsoft Vancouver. Rod Fergusson, who served as executive producer and director of production for Epic Games for the first three games in the Gears of War series, will be joining Black Tusk Studio to work on the franchise.
The Gears of War series began in 2006 on Xbox 360. Gears of War Judgment, the most recent game in the franchise, released in 2013. Overall, the Gears of War franchise has sold more than 22 million copies.
No new Gears of War title was announced. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Quick Take
The Gears of War franchise provided a solid exclusive for Microsoft during the life of the Xbox 360. With a new studio, Microsoft is hoping the franchise will get a fresh perspective, much like 343 did with Halo 4.
