Logitech G910 Orion Spark Mechanical Gaming Keyboard Review

The Logitech G910 Orion Spark mechanical gaming keyboard is a new peripheral that is touted as the world’s fastest mechanical keyboard. Additionally, it is armed with exclusive switches, intelligent illumination and a bevy of customization options. The new “Romer-G” mechanical switches allow the keyboard to boast 25 percent faster actuation and a lot more durability — key ingredients for a great product that frankly might get more than its fair share of abuse.
With nine programmable buttons and a full suite of options available via an impressive software component both for desktop and mobile, the Logitech G910 Orion Spark mechanical gaming keyboard has an impressive arsenal of features to entice the most discriminating gamer.
Keyboard Feature Highlights
While there are a ton of new features rolled into this keyboard, Logitech has first and foremost touted their exclusive Romer-G mechanical switches that, according to the manufacturer, make the keyboard the fastest ever. The switches boast an improved actuation by 25 percent and durability by more than 40 percent in their tests. Given that speed performance and durability are of vital importance to not just pro gamers but those that aspire to have every edge in battle possible, the new switches are indeed impressive.
Another aspect of the switches that might be downplayed but deserves mentioning is both the feel and quietness. The keys are wonderfully tactile and will not bother anyone around you, which are two things that can rarely be said for mechanical gaming keyboards.
The intelligent RGB illumination is not exclusive but is rare to find on gaming keyboards. Users have the ability to choose from a variety of color-coded presets or they can totally customize every single keyboard’s key to one of more than 16.8 million colors. This feature is absolutely wonderful for those readers that enjoy a healthy dose of OCD and desire a specific color-coded layout to each genre of game they play. It has proven to be extremely effective to have one set for MOBAs, a different set for MMOs, and one for general computer usage. The subtle differences show up even in users’ peripheral vision, especially in the dark.
Other feature highlights include integration with the ARX Control mobile app, which is available on iOS and Android. The app syncs up to the PC and keyboard, and displays vital system stats and second-screen configuration options. There’s also the aforementioned nine programmable buttons (helpful for macros), dedicated media controls, and 113 key anti-ghosting.
Getting the G910 keyboard installed is extremely easy. All computer users, including novices, should have no trouble getting it up and running in minutes
Simply install the Logitech software first, plug the keyboard in, and then start configuring the keyboard if desired. It’s as simple as that — no hassle.
Keyboard Usage – Gaming
One element not mentioned yet in this review is the shape of the keys themselves. They are ridiculously comfortable to use. Each keycap allows absolute precision positioning thanks to angled side facets. At first it looks cool and feels a little weird, but after a bit of fast-paced gameplay (any MOBA or FPS), gamers should immediately realize that keys are easy to reach, especially the programmable G-keys on the far left that just about any pinkie-finger can use regularly without hassle.
While the amount of engineering and precision put into the keyboard cannot possibly be fully realized by average or even some advanced level gamers, all varieties of users will appreciate the ingenuity and level of sophistication the keyboard will bring. The customizable keys and responsiveness for gaming is nothing short of a revelation and extremely impressive to those that regularly hammer their keyboard, abusing it for all its worth in the heat of battle time and again.
Fortunately, this is not a keyboard that takes a heck of a lot of time to get used to. Kudos to the engineering and UX team as they’ve put the gamer’s needs above all else, perhaps even ergonomics to a degree. It’s a no-bones-about-it approach to design which PC gamers will appreciate. Those that play casual PvE MMOs or FPS games may not appreciate the keyboard quite as much, but it doesn’t represent any less overall value for any gamer type.
Keyboard Usage – General
While gamers certainly buy keyboards to get the maximum possible edge in combat, they also certainly want a keyboard they can use for normal computer usage. The keyboard for general usage — such as web browsing, forum posting, email composition, and other activities — holds up just fine.
A minor area of improvement would be the shape of the wrist guard, which for whatever reason doesn’t align nicely while typing with a left hand. It works fine for gaming, but placement for typing isn’t ideal. The built-in keys and knobs for multimedia controls are very useful.
At time of writing, the Logitech G910 Orion Spark has an MSRP of $179.99, placing it at the upper end of the price spectrum. Most top-end mechanical keyboards run around $169.99, so there’s a very small premium gamers will have to pay for what the G910 has to offer.
Given the exclusive performance from the mechanical switches, the quietness of the device, and the incredible overall feel the keyboard brings to the table, the price is more than justified. While gamers might be prohibited from picking up this unit based on the price, it still represents a significant value considering the quality and long-term reliability the keyboard will provide, especially for those that occasionally rage when things don’t go so well.
There simply hasn’t been a better performing mechanical keyboard I have put my hands on in a long time — possibly ever. The level of engineering is obvious from the first moment hands are put on the device, and the level of sophistication the software brings to the user for total customization rounds out the experience. Adding in a second-screen experience via a mobile phone is a nice touch for bonus points.
Overall, if a gamer spends a lot of time playing MOBA/Hero Brawlers, RTS games, or PVP MMOs, this keyboard is absolutely worth every penny.
