[adsense160itp]At E3 this week, Square Enix announced the development of KINGDOM HEARTS III for the next-generation consoles PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
The storyline of Kingdom Hearts III will feature a somewhat matured Sora who begins an adventure with Mickey, Donald and Goofy through Disney worlds old and new. Their goal is to stop the evil Master Xehanort who seeks to war against the tyranny of light. Sora, Donald and Goofy will search for the seven guardians of light and the Key to Return Hearts as King Mickey and Riku search for previous Keyblade wielders.
Tetsuya Nomura producer of prior installments in the Kingdom Hearts series had been approached by Disney at the conclusion of Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix regarding the development of Kingdom Hearts III but delayed work on the next installment of the series due to obligations with Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Nomura has confirmed that Kingdom Hearts III will be the last in the Xehanort storyline but not the last Kingdom Hearts game.
Kingdom Hearts III was initially announced as a PlayStation 4 game but will not be exclusive to the PlayStation 4 console as it was later announced that it would also be released on the Xbox One as well. Due to Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm and Marvel Entertainment, it was initially speculated that the next title in the Kingdom Hearts franchise would contain characters from the Marvel universe. It was also thought that the acquisition would be an ideal opportunity for a series revamp. This does not seem to be the case though the conclusion of the current storyline with Kingdom Hearts III may be the groundwork for a series overhaul.
No release date has been given for Kingdom Hearts III but the initial trailer was revealed at E3 this week which featured content from previous games in the franchise and a preview of some gameplay footage from the upcoming title.
