iPad Mini Event Planned for October 23

Apple is planning to hold a media event to announce the iPad Mini on Oct. 23, according to a report by AllThingsD. The date was confirmed by Jim Dalrymple of The Loop.
The “iPad Mini” is the unofficial name given to Apple’s rumored smaller tablet. It is said to have a 7.85 inch liquid-crystal display.
If the date for the press conference proves to be true, it will take place on a Tuesday. Traditionally, Apple hosts media events on Wednesdays. It will also be taking place just three days before the scheduled release of Microsoft’s Surface tablet, taking away some thunder from the Windows 8 device.
No location for the event is yet known. It will likely take place at the company’s Town Hall Auditorium at the Apple corporate headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. Past announcements, including the iPhone 4S, OS X Lion and next-generation MacBook Air, have all made their debut at the same location.
Apple is planning the iPad Mini as a response to the smaller, more affordable tablets released by other companies such as the Android-powered Nexus 7 and Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD. In a market that was once dominated by Apple, more compact tablets starting at $200 have found a niche. Apple is hoping to gain back those consumers by taking the iPad in a new direction.
Aside from the 7.85 inch screen, the smaller iPad will pack a Lightning connector. Further details are scarce. It will likely be thinner and have a headphone jack at the top left corner, a Nano-SIM card slot on the right and a design similar to its larger counterpart.
