Into The Dead

Zombies are all the rage, and it seems that every-other game, TV series or film is about the evill-undead. Into The Dead is a new game by PikPok  and delivers a unique experience that really does the Zombie genre justice.

Based in a world overrun with the dead, you have survived, but for how long can you survive? After a dramatic opening scene involving a helicopter crash, you run through fields, corn-fields, forests and more through hoards of evil and quite frightening Zombies.

Along your way you will come across the odd ammunition box or gravestone which contain weapons. With these weapons you can shoot a path through the Zombies. It’s quite fulfilling to blast you way through these Zombies, and it does make your path forward a lot easier to navigate.

Ammunition boxes are thankfully lit-up and as you they get closer when you run towards them it gives you a feeling of relief as it means you’ll be given a weapon! Weapons include a selection of guns, including a shot-gun, uzi, pistol and more. One of the more fun weapons to use is the chainsaw which gives you a limited amount of fuel to plough your way through the Zombies.

The idea of course is to get as far as you can without getting killed. You’ll get killed by running directly into a Zombie, and the game is then over. Thankfully, before you start the game you can select a perk which will give you a 1500m head-start, a weapon, an ammo-boost or more crates. You can select as many of these as you want, but they will cost you 100 coins each.

There are three modes of play, namely classic, where you must run as far as you can, Massacre where you just have to kill as many Zombies as you can and a soon to be released Hardcore level. Control of all levels has you moving either left or right, and firing the weapons when needed.

Graphics

The game sets out to make you believe that you are in a grim Zombie Apocalypse landscape, and with the use of dark colours, gritty visuals and a short-draw distance it works well. The Zombies you face are animated well and will lurch towards you should you get close to them.

In later levels there will be mist in front of you, and the Zombies rise from the mist as you are running towards them. This effect is truly frightening and you will feel your heart race as you realise what is in front of you.

Graphics in a mobile device have never been used to such great effect as they have in Into The Dead. Simply saying how effective they are is not good enough, because in motion they are terrific. The artists who worked on this game should really have some praise for their work.

Sound

Where would a post-apocalyptic World be without moaning Zombies? Yes, these guys will moan at you as you pass them, but an even better effect is the sound of your own breath as you race through the landscape. It’s a brilliant effect, and one that really adds to the tension and atmostphere.

Overall

There really is a lot of good in this game. The controls are fluid and work well, the story is believable, there are plenty of things to unlock as you go through different missions, the graphics are superb and the sound is cool.

The missions will have you do things such as jump over so many fences, kill so many Zombies with a particular weapon or some other objective. There are three objectives to each level and after level 10 you will unlock the Massacre level. Each objective is fun and challenging, and again will have you coming back to do more.

Into The Dead for the iPad is seriously good fun, and looks seriously good. If there’s only one Zombie game you download, then it has to be Dead Trigger, if there’s a second Zombie game to download, then it has to be the pretty awesome Into The Dead.
