The title has remained out of print for years and has never been republished due to the closure of both its original publisher and its developer. Until recently, rights to the game belonged to neither party. Those rights have recently been acquired by Night Dive Studios: a company devoted to redistributing old video games. Night Dive Studios has given permission to GOG to sell the game.
In following with GOG’s policy, the game will be fully DRM-free and totally optimized for play on modern operating systems. The game is also bundled with extras which include the official manual, the game’s soundtrack and a PDF document which details the making of the game.
Developed originally by The Dreamers Guild and published by Cyberdreams in 1995, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is based on Harlan Ellison’s famous award-winning 1968 short story of the same name. Ellison worked in tandem with the development team to make the game, create its story and voice the game’s main antagonist, the mad computer AM.
Players take control of one of the five survivors. Each survivor plays through their own unique scenario designed for them by AM. Players must solve puzzles, overcome moral dilemmas and confront disturbing situations in order to best AM at his twisted game. If they do well, they stand a chance of defeating the mad computer and will escape from their torment forever. Failure to do so will lead them to a fate worse than death.
When it was originally released, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream won numerous awards and received praise from critics for its story. The game is still remembered today for its disturbing themes, unnerving atmosphere and unique mechanics. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, the classic 1995 DOS point-and-click adventure game, is now available for purchase from GOG. The game is available as a digital download for $5.99
