In this Holiday Shopping Guide we’ll let you know what you should buy for the Gamer in your life, or, for yourself. We all know it’s impossible to find that new gadget or toy to get the gamer in your life because they always seem to have the latest and greatest. We hope that there might be some goodies in here that will tickle their fancy.
For the PC Gamer …
If you have a friend or loved one that plays video games on their PC (specifically Windows-based) computer, there’s plenty that you can get them that will serve as great gifts.
Obvious Choice: Steam Gift
If your PC gamer wants to get a new game but you’re not exactly sure what to get them, you can always get them a Steam Gift Purchase. This will allow them to redeem a game, such as the highly touted The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, if they haven’t gotten it already. If you need more information, check out this link to get more information on how to purchase a gift through Steam.
Neat Choice: Star Wars: The Old RepublicYou can gift up a copy of the brand new and highly anticipated Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is an MMORPG. If you are totally unfamiliar with PC Gaming, the concept of the game is similar to World of WarCraft and other MMOs (like EverQuest, if you go back that far). But this is the “latest and greatest” in the genre and our impressions have been very positive. You can pick up a copy for a friend by visiting EA’s official online software store at Origin.com.
Not So Obvious But Cool: Yoda USB Desk Protector – $26 at ThinkGeek
This one is hilarious. You plug this little yoda guy into your computer and point it in a particular direction. When someone walks by he activates to “protect” your desk. He lights up and even talks. This is a hilarious gift to give someone for their home desk (dorm person) or for them to take to work. Check it out right here.
For the Console Gamer …
Obvious Choice: Gift Card at EBGames
EBGames is everywhere these days so if there’s a game that your gamer friend wants to pre-order they can use the gift card to do that and then pay for it in full (assuming you aren’t a tight-wad) once it does come out with a card you give them. They can also apply the card toward online purchases.
Neat Choice: Wireless Headset from Turtle BeachTurtle Beach makes some really nice wireless headsets we tried out at E3 and came away impressed with their line of products. They have wireless ones compatible with Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. The wireless headsets aren’t cheap (think $150-$250) but they are top quality products that perform at a high level. If you want to check out their line of wireless headsets for all platforms, visit this link to learn more.
No So Obvious But Cool: GUNNAR Optiks MW3 Eyeglasses
For gamers that love to look cool and also make sure their eyes don’t wig out and they go blind in 10 years after constant FPS gaming, you can pick up these slick ergonomically friendly eyeglasses for just $99. It will help lower the strain on the eyes and keep them focused longer.
Other General Shopping Advice …
If you are lost without a clue as to what to buy, here are some good “don’ts” when shopping for your gamer friend:
- Buy a game out of the bargain bin at EBGames or WalMart. Chances are it’s very outdated, has already been played by your gamer friend/loved one and will just end up being returned or given away. Don’t be afraid to give a gift card to a gamer, we like those things.
- Be afraid to specifically ask what your gamer wants. They’ll appreciate that you are getting them exactly what they wanted.
- Forget to ask what platform (PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, etc) to buy the game for if you don’t know already.
- Give a speech about how violent video games are killing America. That’s just dumb and makes us hate you.
So – hopefully you have been able to find some decent ideas here for a gift this holiday season. Happy shopping!!
