Hideo Kojima Leaves Konami to Form Independent Studio

Hideo Kojima has officially left Konami and has formed his own development studio, Kojima Productions.
Kojima Productions will enter into a relationship with Sony to make its first game available on PlayStation 4, Kojima and SCEA president Andrew House confirmed in a video published on the official PlayStation YouTube channel. The video was posted the same day Konami officially confirmed Kojima’s contract had expired.
The video saw Kojima officially announce the opening of his development studio, which is already at work on the development of a new game for PS4. The game is intended to be the first of a new franchise.
“I’m thrilled to embark on creating a new franchise with PlayStation that will give you a new and innovative gaming experience, so please stay tuned,” Kojima said in the video.
Details on the game have yet to be announced.
Kojima’s departure from Konami follows a long dispute between the two, which began last March during the development of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Konami, under what it claimed to be corporate restructuring, stripped any mention of Kojima and his development studio from promotional materials and websites.
Konami would go on to completely shut down Kojima Productions in November. One month later, Konami also controversially barred Kojima from attending the Game Awards 2015 to accept awards for Metal Gear Solid V. The game won several awards, which were accepted by its main actor, Kiefer Sutherland, in Kojima’s stead.
Joining Konami in 1986, Kojima is well-known for helping create the famous Metal Gear series, which debuted in 1987. He’s known also for creating the Zone of the Elders and Policenauts franchises as well as contributing to a number of other Konami games.
Considering Konami’s unfair treatment of Kojima, it was certain that he was going to leave the company in favor of going solo. This latest development further shows the strife, dysfunction and poor business behavior that continues to permeate within Konami. Sadly, it’s unlikely to stop the noticeable downfall of a company famous for introducing gamers to amazing, imaginative titles.
