Guardians of the Galaxy Game in the Works at Square Enix

Guardians of the Galaxy Game

Eidos Montreal, the development studio behind the Deus Ex franchise, is working on a Guardians of the Galaxy game, according to reports by Eurogamer and Kotaku.

Square Enix recently announced a multi-year partnership with Marvel that will span multiple games. As part of that deal, Eidos Montreal will be shifting its focus to a Guardians of the Galaxy title. The studio is also currently working on sequel to the Tomb Raider series, reportedly titled “Shadows of the Tomb Raider.”

Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix’s other major studio, is currently working on project based on The Avengers. Telltale Games is also developing a Guardians of the Galaxy video game, although Eidos Montreal’s version will likely be much different.

What Does This Mean for Deus Ex?

According to reports, the Deus Ex franchise has been placed on indefinite hold. It is not likely that there will be a follow up to 2016’s Deus Ex Mankind Divided for quite some time. Sources told the outlets that a sequel was being planned, but has been cancelled. The game would have tied up the loose ends for the trilogy that started with Deus Ex Human Revolution.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Square Enix made a major push regarding the Deus Ex franchise following the launch of the 2011 title. Mankind Divided was expected to be the beginning of that push, but the game spent five years in development as it grew to a larger scope and it failed to live up to sales expectations.

The company reportedly does not have plans to continue the Deus Ex franchise anytime soon “unless Mankind Divided suddenly becomes more profitable.”
