Guacamelee 2 review

Drinkbox Studios announced the sequel to its popular Metroidvania action-platformer Guacamelee! 2 will release on August 21 for PlayStation 4 and PC.

Eager fans can pre-order it on the PlayStation Store today and wishlist it on Steam.

After stopping Carlos Calaca, Juan Aguacate enjoys a well deserved retirement. When a ruthless and powerful luchador emerges as the ruler of a parallel timeline threatening the entire Mexiverse, Juan has no choice but to become a hero again. Donning his special luchador mask and tights, he must fight through the world of the living and the dead along with time and space to save his family and the Mexiverse itself.

Puns are back in a major way!

Fans of the first game will be happy to know that the sequel completely expands upon the concepts and systems. It adds new levels, enemies, characters, and gameplay mechanics.

Juan gains some powerful new moves like the Eagle Boost, Rocket Kick, and Pollo Shot to aid in combat and platforming. The chicken form gains some unique new abilities to give you more ridiculous chicken-based platforming, combat and exploring. A new upgrade system allows Juan to train with “trainers” from across the world by completing their challenges, Juan’ll be able to upgrade his movement, combat, traversal, and much more.

The Mexiverse has gotten much larger thanks to the addition of space-time to the rich, colorful living and dead worlds inspired by Mexican folklore. A new rendering engine brings these gorgeous environment into even more vibrant detail. Not only does it look better, but levels are denser than before with tons of secrets and optional content to explore. The bigger maps and double the enemy types as the first game, along with a roster of new bosses means there is a lot for Juan to bodyslam and hurricanrana than ever before.

Pollos are running wild in Guacamelee! 2.

If you loved the soundtrack for the first game then Guacamelee! 2 has a brand new soundtrack composed by Peter Chapman and Rom Di Prisco to vibe to. As a bonus the score also has new tracks from special guests Mariachi Entertainment System!

As if all of that wasn’t enough, Guacamelee! 2 is upping the ante for co-op! Unlike the previous game that allowed only a single extra play to mix it up in the lucha, this time 4-players can hop into the action for a fatal four-way co-op experience. At any time, up to 4-players can drop-in/drop-op to experience the entire story in local co-op!

Guacamelee! 2 launches on PS4 and PC August 21 for $19.99.

Our Take

Guacamelee! was a special game for us here at Gaming Illustrated. Not only was it one of our favorite Metroidvania games in the last five years, but it had a deeper meaning as a game celebrating the vibrancy and beauty of Mexican culture. It looks like Drinkbox Studios isn’t letting up on the celebration with the sequel. The vast amount of expansion and improvements made to ensure the sequel lives up to the legacy of the mask is exciting to see. We honestly can’t wait to play Guacamelee! 2 and you should be eager to play as well!
