Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is finally coming to PlayStation 3. Rockstar’s highely successful open world hit will be available on the PlayStation Network as a PlayStation 2 Classic on Dec. 11.
The official PlayStation Blog confirmed the release date for GTA: San Andreas, which has been in question since it was discovered the ESRB had rated the game in October. No price for the download was announced in the post but all other PS2 Classics on PSN cost $9.99. That will likely be the cost for GTA: San Andreas as well.
GTA: San Andreas was the last of the Grand Theft Auto trilogy available for PS2 after Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The game is the best-selling title of all time for PS2.
In GTA: San Andreas, players take on the role of Carl Johnson in the 1990s as he comes back home to Los Santos, a city based on real-world Los Angeles. He must deal with corrupt cops, family issues, drug dealers, pimps, mafia and much more as he fights for a better life. The huge environment, variety of missions and famous GTA humor make the game one of the best sandbox titles ever.
The release of the game comes at a good time as Rockstar plans to release Grand Theft Auto 5 in Spring next year. The latest installment of the franchise will revisit Los Santos, this time in a modern setting.
GTA 3 is available as a PS2 Classic on PSN in North America right now. GTA: Vice City was rated by the ESRB well before GTA: San Andreas was but still has yet to get a release date. However, GTA: Vice City is currently available on iOS as a mobile download in honor of its tenth anniversary.
