Grease is definitely the word. John Travolta became the world’s box-office king with his unforgettable performance as Danny Zuko in this film version of the smash hit Broadway musical about the fabulous ’50s. Olivia Newton-John rocketed to stardom in her American film debut as the adorable and sexy Sandy who’s determined to win Zuko’s heart. The supporting cast boasts incredible performances from Jeff Conaway, Stockard Channing, Frankie Avalon, Sid Caesar, Eve Arden and others.
Some nice features, just not many of them for this DVD:
Dolby Digital Sound, 5.1 Surround
Original Theatrical Trailer
Retrospective Interviews with John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway, Didi Conn, Director Randal Kleiser, and Producer Allan Carr
The highlight of the DVD features are quite easily the Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound (hey it’s a MUSICAL, of course the sound is going to be important) and the GREAT interviews with the cast. There was some insights into the movie not known before, and it just seems like everyone involved in this movie really loved working on it.
Could there have been any more chemistry between John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John? Although the cast was really critiqued for being too old (30 somethings in High School after all) the casting actually turned out to be perfect. Travolta was the absolute perfect pick for Danny Zuko, and who else could steal hearts like Olivia Newton-John? Both lead parts were wonderfully acted and sung, and the supporting cast was just as strong.
Plot / story:
This is the adaptation of the smash Broadway hit, so the plot is fairly well known. Straight edged and innocent Sandy falls in love for local cool-guy greaser bad-boy Zuko in a movie about high school life in the 1950s. The songs in the movie are truly timeless and still will bring a smile or step to audiences everywhere.
I was all of two years old when Grease came out in the theaters, and was three when it came on to HBO. I can still remember having my father tape it on our brand new VCR (that’s when they got invented for you youngsters) and I literally watched it over and over and over again. This was just my favorite movie as a toddler, and why not. The songs were catchy, the plot fairly innocent (to a Toddler at least) and there was no graphic violence or nudity.
Grease is a timeless classic that can be enjoyed by the entire family. You can’t help to be caught up in the movie and feel like you’re in high school along with the cast. The DVD captures the essence of the film audio and video like no VHS tape ever could. If you enjoyed this film then purchasing the DVD is an absolute must, and with the retrospective interviews included – this is a DVD you have to buy today.
