God of War has become the fastest-selling PlayStation 4 exclusive, Sony announced on the PlayStation Blog.
The game sold more than 3.1 million units globally during its first three days of release, starting April 20 and ending April 22.
Sony Santa Monica, the developer behind the God of War series, first revealed God of War at Sony’s E3 2016 Conference. Serving as a soft reboot for the franchise, the fourth mainline God of War moved the series’ main character Kratos from the world of Greek mythology to the snowy lands of Norse gods. Kratos is joined by his son Atreus, who assists him in combat while enriching the story in an emotional way, which is unprecedented for the series.
“I would like to personally thank the millions of fans around the world who decided to embark on Kratos’ latest adventure with us,” said Shannon Studstill, studio head at Sony Santa Monica. “Your support is truly inspiring, and it’s a reason why we push ourselves every day to go beyond the boundaries of play. I’d also like to thank our Creative Director, Cory Barlog, and Director of Product Development, Yumi Yang and our entire amazing team at Santa Monica Studio. The belief in the game’s vision and the passion for storytelling across the team is undeniable. We look forward to hearing more about how fans are creating new memories of their favorite God of War gameplay moments that will be remembered for a long time.”
Upon release, God of War received universal critical acclaim. With a 94 rating, God of War is the highest-rated PlayStation 4 exclusive. In 2018, Sony is likely hoping its upcoming exclusives Detroit: Become Human and Spider-Man will garner similar reception.
The team at Sony Santa Monica deserves all the sales and praise God of War is getting. Kratos’ foray onto the PS4 has reinvigorated a series that was losing it’s edge due to a lack of innovation. Having to wait an undetermined amount of years for the next entry will be difficult but likely worth it.
