God of War Combat Detailed in New Video

God of War

Sony is offering a look at God of War‘s combat with new videos explaining how Kratos’ axe adds new depth to the series.

When it released on PlayStation 2 in 2005, God of War was a brutal expression of action-combat games. The series followed main character Kratos as he tore a bloody path through the pantheon of Greek gods in his ultimate quest to exact revenge upon his family.

Sony Santa Monica created a flagship series for Sony as each game upped the ante in terms of lavish setpieces, gory kills, and over-the-top action. The last game in the series, God of War: Ascension, was released in 2013 as a prequel to the main three entries. It garnered a lukewarm reception as Kratos was starting to show some age.

God of War on PS4 is looking to completely reinvent the series in terms of combat and how it handles the always angry protagonist. Gone are the Blades of Chaos/Exile which cut through swaths of enemies from a distance. Kratos now uses the Leviathan Axe which caters to the shift in camera perspective to one more familiar in third-person shooters.

Kratos can brutally swipe at enemies with light and heavy attacks, intimately bringing him closer than ever to opponents. The axe can also be thrown to stick into enemies and briefly freeze them in place, trip them to set up combos, or take them out from a distance. Without the axe in hand, Kratos can use his fists to beat up enemies and stun them to execute a finisher or block attacks with a shield.

Atreus, Kratos’ son, plays an integral role in combat as well. By pressing the square button, players can get Atreus to shoot arrows at enemies, acting as a diversion or hitting ones that are too fast for the Leviathan Axe. Though this entry is definitely looking to change many elements, combat is as fierce as it has ever been. And with a new upgrade system, an added amount of depth should keep players looking for strategic ways to best difficult odds.

God of War releases on April 20 for PlayStation 4.
