The company stated Gears of War: Judgment will be available on March 19, 2013. The release falls into a very busy first quarter of 2013 that will also see Tomb Raider, Dead Space 3, and BioShock Infinite hitting store shelves.
Gears of War: Judgment is being touted as the most challenging Gears of War experience so far. The campaign follows
Damon Baird and takes place years before the events of the first Gears of War. Gamers will take control of Baird as he leads his Kilo Squad in the immediate aftermath of Emergence Day. The group is attempting to save the besieged city of Halvo Bay from a never-before-seen Locust enemy.
In addition to Baird, the Kilo Squad includes an old favorite, Augustus “Cole Train” Cole. New characters Sofia Hendrik, Ezra Loomis, and Garron Paduk are also members of the Kilo Squad.
The campaign mode will feature a new Mission Declassification system that will uncover critical information during the single player mode. It will also unlock achievements and lead to more challenging scenarios during gameplay.
The Xbox 360 exclusive title will introduce a new mode to multiplayer. OverRun is a hybrid between Horde mode and Beast mode. Gamers who are on the COG team will choose from four classes: an Engineer, a Scout, a Medic, or a Solider. Up to five players on the COG will have to defend structures against another team of gamers playing as Locust characters such as the Mauler and the Ticker.
A new Smart Spawn System will be integrated into both the campaign and multiplayer modes of Gears of War: Judgment. This will help make the game more challenging and ensure each play through is unique because types, timing, and locations of enemies change.
Comic Con also featured the debut of a new tutorial trailer. Baird walks potential players through every aspect of OverRun mode.
A new map, Island, was also introduced at Comic Con. The map is a supply and refueling depot off the coast of Halvo Bay that is actually made up of several small islands connected by bridges and tunnels.
For the first time in the Gears of War franchise, Epic Games will not be handling the development of the game internally. Instead, developer People Can Fly has been handed the reins. The company was previously responsible for the development of Bulletstorm and helped with Gears of War 2. Of course, the team at Epic has been keeping a watchful eye on development to make sure the game lives up to the expectations that come with a Gears of War title.
Gears of War 3 released in September 2011. Nobody expected another Gears of War title to be released so quickly until Gears of War: Judgment was revealed a few days before E3. A demo of OverRun mode was already playable at E3. Epic Games is now supplying a steady stream of details on the game that is expected to continue leading up to the March release.
