Evan's Remains Review

Humans are problem solvers. If there is an obstacle in our way, we want to remove it. We want to arrive at a solution that helps us move forward.

Evan’s Remains is centered around solving a problem: finding Evan. The core problem that needs to be solved seems easy. However, there are a myriad of other problems that pop up requiring additional solutions. Suddenly, the straightforward solution becomes a puzzle to figure out.

The Third Man

The letter was slightly cryptic, but not hard to understand: I’m on an uninhabited island in the pacific…send Dysis. For Evan, it seemed too easy. Yet for Dysis, what could she do, but go?

When she arrived, it was everything Evan said and so much more. Uninhabited, sure. Evan, nowhere to be found. What Dysis does find are a bunch of bizarre monoliths among the picturesque scenery.

Vanille is a sweet person, who may be in over her head.

Complaining to her handler, Nikola, that Evan likely isn’t even on the island, Dysis runs into a gentleman. Obviously, it has to be Evan! Except she’s never seen Evan, so she can’t be sure. The man is not forthcoming when he first meets Dysis, but she quickly realizes it isn’t Evan.

After chasing the man down, she employs subterfuge telling him her name is Vanille. He opens up to her that his name is Clover Emor, and he is on the island to discover the secret to immortality. It becomes apparent the easy task of finding Evan on the island will be anything but.

Evan's Remains Review
Vanille’s quest to find Evan will be far from easy.

Clover reveals that the secret to immortality is related to the many monoliths scattered around the island. It turns out they are much more than Dysis thought. Weird, sure. However, who would have thought they’d reveal the key to living forever.

Story propels and fuels Evan’s Remains. It centers around a mystery that layers additional mysteries on top of it. The answers to those mysteries keep you enthralled as questions get cleared up. Discussing it is difficult as revealing too much could spoil some major reveals. Hopefully, we avoided any of them.

What you should know is the reveal is wild! It is definitely worth sticking with til the end. Luckily, Evan’s Remains never wears out its welcome. It is a perfect length allowing the story to run its natural course and its puzzle gameplay to remain charming.

Portals, man…

The monoliths on the island make up Evan’s Remains gameplay. While Dysis can simply walk around the monoliths, where would the fun be in that? She chooses to engage directly with them and figure out the solution to progress forward. Each monolith has unique obstacles barring her from reaching a high ledge and the route to the next monolith.

The puzzle design is elegant.

Make-up of the monoliths vary with the puzzles increasing in difficulty the deeper you get into the island. The core mechanic involves hitting basic switches to push or recess green stone platforms. These green stone platforms are the key to reaching the high ledge and pushing onward.

As the puzzles get more complex and involved, additional triggers and switches get thrown into the mix. Later puzzles require a bounce trigger that helps you reach great heights. These bounce triggers typically require a smart use of gravity and force to propel you where you need to go.

Evan's Remains Review
Evan’s Remains puzzle-platforming is a treat.

By the time you reach the game’s climax, monoliths require you to suss out switches that change triggers and pads while moving green stones. Solving them and pushing forward becomes a bit of trial and error, but figuring out the solution is super rewarding.

Evan’s Remains’ gameplay is an absolute joy! The monoliths delightfully combine platforming and puzzles in a clever way.

Evan’s Remains is a surprising little game. It blends narrative with intuitive yet challenging puzzle gameplay well. The best part of the story is the huge swing it takes with its final reveal and conceit. While mileage may vary, it is bold to go the direction it does, and well worth playing for that alone.

Evan’s Remains was reviewed on Nintendo Switch with a code provided by the publisher.

Gaming Illustrated RATING

The puzzle gameplay is so relaxing and intuitive, but doesn’t lack challenge. The only problem is there aren’t more puzzle levels in the game.

Evan’s Remains has charming pixel graphics that pop with color.

Evan’s Remains has a perfectly cromulent score.

Evan’s Remains story is a prototypical zagging instead of zigging situation, and memorable as a result.
