Developer Precursor Games is launching a crowdfunding campaign for Shadow of the Eternals, a spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem.
Precursor Games is seeking $1.5 million for development of the game. If successfully funded, Shadow of the Eternals will release for PC and Wii U in 12 separate episodes.
Developed by Silicon Knights, Etnernal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem released in 2002 for GameCube to widely positive reviews. The studio disintegrated and nearly shut down before it could produce a sequel to the GameCube classic.
Shadow of the Eternals revolves around Louisiana detective Paul Becker. After exploring a bloody scene left behind by two rival cults, he uncovers secrets behind the Eternals.
The psychological third-person horror game takes players through 2,500 years of history throughout Egypt, England, Hungary and the U.S. Players will struggle determining what is real and what is perception as they progress through the game using melee combat, magic and sanity.
While the primary goal of the crowdfunding campaign is to raise $1.5 million, any additional funding raised will go towards creating future episodes, more characters, additional platforms and in-game perks.
Silicon Knights attempted to sue Epic Games in 2007 over use of the Unreal Engine but was shot down by the court and ordered to recall games using the game engine. In the aftermath, the studio was left with only five employees and currently has no known future projects.
There is no timetable planned for the release of the first episode of Shadow of the Eternals.
