E3 2011 – Top 10 Most Anticipated Games

/ Jun 1st, 2011 No Comments

E3 2011 kicks off next week in Los Angeles, CA and there’s a ton for gamers to get excited about. We are anticipating announcements of next generation hardware from Nintendo (pretty confident), PlayStation (slightly confident) and Microsoft (hey, we’re taking a stab at this one). Even better, we have some seriously huge franchises returning with bigger-than-ever sequels and some new blockbusters that are sure to become instant classics.  Rather than doing the dramatic countdown like everyone else, we’ll just give you our top ten from the top!

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Star Wars: The Old Republic

#1 – Star Wars: The Old Republic

While we admit that nothing short of a zombie invasion encompassing the entire Earth could possibly make a dent in World of WarCraft traffic, Star Wars: The Old Republic is the most exciting and hyped MMO since WoW showed up all those years ago.  Although there have been some good ones to come along (cue the tip of the cap to Rift), Bioware looks like they might have the next great MMO on their hands.  From Jedi to Sith, we’re sure gamers are going to enjoy the deep storyline and amazing adventures. We can’t wait to dive in ourselves. When this game is released – which we continue to hope is sometime in 2011 as previously announced – we expect the following to happen: First, unemployment will rise because people won’t want jobs to go to because they’ll be too busy playing this game. Second, divorce rates will go up (self explanatory).  Finally, third, GPAs across the globe will plummet downward – and we can’t wait!!

#2 – Deus Ex

Deus Ex: Human Evolution

Did you see the trailer just released for Deus Ex: Human Evolution!?  Every single beta report we’ve seen and read has been raving that this is one of the most addictive and deep games ever developed. The concept is that the game will take you 25-30 hours to play through, but you won’t be done with the game as you will be aching to play through again and approach it in a totally different way. Stunning graphics for sure, but we’re hearing this is the most FUN game to play being unveiled at E3 2011.

#3 – Mass Effect 3

A tremendously popular series now in its third incarnation, Mass Effect 3 is sure to be one of the biggest titles released shown from this trade show. While the game is still in the middle of production we’re expecting some big pieces to finally be shown at E3 2011. Another Bioware title (key kudos to those guys for nailing two of the top three spots, eh!), the story continues on from the dramatic events at the end of Mass Effect 2, with all the main characters expected to return. Updated weapons, updated look and feel to the game and more action than ever before. Sounds awesome.

#4 – Gears of War 3

Perhaps the best Xbox 360 franchise outside of Halo (now that we think about it – it’s definitely debatable these days), Gears of War returns in this third edition with gamers everywhere salivating thanks to thoughts of new multiplayer maps and features for Gears of War 3.  There have been promised changes coming for this title to distinguish it from the second, specifically to the weapons offered. We’re expecting more story and a ton more in the multiplayer department.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

#5 – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Honestly, we think we could have made 5a and 5b here between this title and Battlefield 3. CoD is the big man on campus, so it’ll take a lot to unseat Activision’s top franchise. This time around the war zones in America, Germany, France and the UK will be the areas where you fight for survival. There’s a big emphasis on what Activision is calling “the most epic storyline in the entire Call of Duty history” over and over, only increasing the hype. Will it live up to the billing? We sure think so.

#6 – Battlefield 3

EA has been engaging in some much publicized smack talk against Activision over which title will “win” over the other. Battlefield 3 has been portrayed as an evolutionary step forward… A bold step forward… A kick-your-teeth-in step forward. Sounds good to us.   There’s a brand new engine in place and by all accounts this title boasts masterfully crafted artwork and special effects. This will be EA’s best effort to take on CoD.

#7 – Soul Calibur V

Another game that was in dire need of a major shake up is promising to do just that with the fighting game, Soul Calibur V. Those close to the project promise that with the new era and new characters, the story will take a dramatic turn for the better. We’ve also heard that the developers in the series felt that the previous editions were “too heavy” and that this edition gets back to quick, fast and more exciting action.

#8 – Super Mario 3DS

It wouldn’t be E3 without a stupidly long line for no good reason at the Nintendo booth, right? Right! With rumors going bananas over a Wii 2 console announcement (or whatever they call it), there’s also a lot of hype for some new titles for the new 3DS mobile platform.  Specifically, Super Mario 3DS promises to be a cross between previous titles while trying to take the best from the historical platforms such as the Nintendo 64. If you haven’t checked out the 3DS at all yet (if that’s you please punch yourself in the nards … we can wait … seriously …. Okay thanks for taking that one for the team!) this is sure to be the flagship title for the new mobile gaming platform.

BioShock Infinite

BioShock Infinite

#9 – BioShock Infinite

Irrational games has stated time and again that BioShock was never about the setting, but always about gameplay.  If we were to categorize this quirky game with a big following, it’d be as one of the more unique and story-driven games of the last few years. Although we take a big breath of hesitation at the thought that this is a prequel (as a sequel), we have faith that this title will come through as a serious winner.

#10 – The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

If you are excited for this game making our top 10, chances are you’re not just a person who has played Elder Scroll games. We get it. You’re not just a “fan” of the series who’s bothered to give a “like” on FaceBook for Elder Scroll games. No, you’re probably a fanatical lunatic who lives, breathes, eats and sleeps this series.  Like we just said, we get it.  And finally, after a much long awaited return, the series is finally back. We know what to expect – lore, mystery, story and action. We’re definitely expecting to be blown away by this one.
