Dungeon Siege III Preview

/ May 30th, 2011 No Comments

When it comes to highly anticipated PC games, Dungeon Siege III certainly tops the list of many RPG fans.  The franchise is incredibly popular already, with little wonder.  Brought to us by Obsidian, the same studio that brought us old favorites such as Neverwinter Nights 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, there’s a lot of hype surrounding this title. Coupled of course with the fact that it also has the Square Enix brand tag on it (who have consistently delivered with the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts RPG franchises), there was little doubt that gamers would be clamoring for any information on this game.  We first learned quite a bit back at E3 2010, and what we’ve learned since continues to look very promising.  Dungeon Siege III looks like it is going to be every bit as good as the titles that came before it and take the franchise in a great direction.

There are four protagonists to choose from in this series, each with their own unique abilities and fighting style.  You have your traditional roles: healer, tank, ranged/melee DPS, etc.  Female gamers will likely be especially pleased to learn that the female players in this game are not sexed-up overly-inferior characters we encounter in most games.  In fact, developers appear to have spent as much time on these characters as they did our male protagonists which is a welcome change to be sure. Can’t we have attractive heroes of both sexes that are equally powerful in this day and age, after all?

Dungeon Siege III is very promising for gamers thanks to Obsidian and their stellar reputation.  While they are very well known for their New Vegas game and others like it, the dungeons and combat of Dungeon Siege III are certainly new ground for the company. Yet in the gameplay preview videos we’ve seen, the game looks as though it was created by people who lived their entire lives making robust hack-n-slash RPGs.  Players are forced to actively switch between offense and defense and between healing and fighting.  Players are forced to think fast and react immediately, something even most of the top RPGs out there fail to exceed at. The game is driven by story in a robust world where the stakes get higher and higher, where’s it’s up to you to be the ultimate hero.

While playing the game, you’ll have your four preset characters after the initial levels. Gamers will “unlock” characters as they play through the game until they get the four they will play with through the rest of the game. This process gives a nice backstory to the group and also provides a nice way to “get to know” the special talents of each member. Once you have your foursome together, subsequent levels will get much harder to account for more party members and, obviously, to make the game a bit more fun. There’s a serious element of strategy involved with Dungeon Siege III that will require you to figure out the special abilities of each one of your party members and set them to their strengths for specific situations. It’s this added layer of intense strategy for combat that makes this game unique as opposed to other solo-type hack-n-slash RPG games.

Obsidian doesn’t disappoint when it comes to the things they are most famous for, either.  The company is known for creating incredibly rich, interesting, and detailed worlds, and fans of the company’s other series’ will find this in abundance in Dungeon Siege III.  While few players have gotten to experience the game hands on, the feedback so far has been universal in this respect.  The same holds true for the storyline, or at least what has been seen of it, which players feel has been engaging, captivating, and more than enough to keep you wanting to play more.

For those who love questing, looting, and running dungeons, this game is certain not to disappoint.  For those who want to experience a kick-butt RPG and to be able to dive into a game that will almost instantly captivate and show off the very best of what the format has to offer – Dungeon Siege still remains an ideal choice in this third edition.  Between Obsidian and Square Enix, you are looking at two of the best names in the world of video games today.  The release date for Dungeon Siege III is fast approaching on June 21st and the more information that is leaked, the more many of us are dying to dive into it.  Dungeon Siege III is shaping up to be a huge success and if the Obsidian sequel history is anything to go by, gamers on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC platforms are sure to be satisfied.
