Dragon’s Lair (BluRay)

SYNOPSIS:
By this time, even if you don’t remember the original release you know all about the story of Dragon’s Lair. Revolutionary, fun, quarter-pumping action for all us kids back in mid 1980s. Since then we’ve seen Dragon’s Lair redone at least a half-dozen times, and most recently and effectively done on DVD. This time around however, Digital Leisure is employing the use of BluRay to deliver a definitive version of the game in 1080p resolution and using the BluRay Java system for gameplay. So instead of this game being exclusively for PS3, the game is open to play on any BluRay player.

ENTERTAINMENT
Dragon’s Lair on BluRay employs a new technology called BD-J which essentially is a java program running on BluRay. The advantage to this edition over the old DVD edition is pure speed and responsiveness – it’s MUCH quicker and feels much like the original game for the first time on a console system. All Blu-ray Disc players are designed to play BD-J titles based on the Blu-ray Disc Asscoiation Specifications. For fans of the game, like myself, being able to play in authentic Arcade mode is a lot of fun. In addition to this, you can play on “home” mode with unlimited lives if you just want to get through the game to see all the levels.
LASTING FACTOR
The game also has two difficulty modes, Easy and Hard, and because I’m a wuss I had a great time playing on Easy. I was definitely entertained and the fun factor was there all over again. After having played countless retreads of this title (I enjoyed Dragon’s Lair HD on Xbox!) released over the last 15 or so years, I can say that this is the final, definitive version that you’ll want to buy to have in your gaming collection.
AUDIO & VIDEO QUALITY
Dragon's Lair has never looked better, even in the arcade. Back in the old days they used a TV to deliver the graphics and now looking at it in 1080p on a 56” HDTV it looks fantastic. Don Bluth did such an amazing artistic job which really fueled the love for the title for so long, and this BluRay edition of the game can be seen as the final, definitive edition offering the best possible transfer from the original laser discs.

I forgot how amazing the sound effects were for the game until I popped it in and had the 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound on my home theater turned on. What great sound effects! The sounds to the game are done really well and make great use of surround sound technology, which is brand new for this BluRay edition.

ORIGINALITY
One great thing that accompanies this edition of the game are “extras” including interviews with the three creators, as well as a version of the game playing through itself with a picture-in-picture view of the creators offering commentary on what went into every level in the game. Fans will be thrilled to see and hear what the creators have to offer.
OVERALL IMPRESSION
If you have a PS3 or other BluRay player, this is actually a great title to pick up. It’s cheaper than most PS3 games if you shop around, and looks and plays great. Anyone 30 to 35 in age will have a ball going back and reliving their youth in this fantastic remake of the game. Between the extras, the remade graphics and new 5.1 surround sound, Dragon’s Lair on BluRay is a fun title that serves as the best edition of the game to be released to date.
