D-Link AC5300 Router Review: Does Whatever a Spider Can

/ Jun 10th, 2016 No Comments

Dlink AC5300 Router Review

One look at the D-Link AC5300 router gives people one of two reactions: this is really cool looking, or wow, this looks like a big, dead petrified spider.

Whatever your reaction is when seeing this router, we can tell you it doesn’t change how well it does its job, and trust that it does its job very, very well.

With some interesting features, such as tri-band WiFi and SmartConnect, is this the spider-droid you are looking for?

Performance

There is a particular audience D-Link is targeting with this router and that is hardcore gamers and 4K streamers. With 4×4 data streams, MU-MIMO and tri-band WiFi, the AC5300 sped through everything we threw at it with no issues. Even with basically a mini-lan party (four PlayStation 4s playing OverWatch and Battlefront online), we did not suffer a single hiccup.

As usual, this comes with the caveat that you subscribe to high speeds from your internet service provider. If you have problems with this router, it is likely because of your internet speeds, not due to an issue with the router. Trust me, the AC5300 can handle anything you throw at it.

If looks could kill…

Of course, that isn’t to say you may not run into any issues. After all, this is technology, right?

Setup is a breeze. You basically just plug it in. After we got our router up and running, things were going good for about 20 minutes. That’s when we started to run into problems, in particular to mobile devices using WiFi.

It seemed like pages were taking forever to load, and even videos on the YouTube app were constantly buffering. We called our internet service provide to verify that everything was working fine on their end and we ensured the modem was functioning properly. We even switched to another router to make sure our connection was running properly.

Finally, after some trial and error, we discovered the problem. For some reason, the AC5300 does not work correctly on the IPV6 version the ISP provides. This is something we’ve noticed with a few other routers as well. After going into the router settings and turning IPV6 off, we faced no other issues with this router.

Overall

So who is the D-Link AC5300 router actually for? Is this for the standard gamer that plays Call of Duty or Overwatch on occasion? Probably not. Is it for the hardcore gamer that plays competitively and wants to play online with zero lag? Most of these types of players will require the fastest possible internet speeds, and that typically comes from being hardwired through Ethernet.

So who is this power house router for then? This is for people who want to take full advantage of their WiFi speeds and have multiple devices connected to it at a time. If you have consoles, computers, phones, tablets, and even household devices like light bulbs connected in your home, this is the router for you.

The $359.99 price tag on Amazon is hefty for this big, red spider-beast but trust us, it is worth every single penny.
