Defender Chronicles 2

Defender Chronicles 2

Defender Chronicles 2

I talked last review about my aversion to puzzle games. Fortunately, this weakness does not apply to all matters of the mind. Strategy games are, though by no means a strength of mine, something that can be enjoyed by yours truly and also something I can be marginally good at (sometimes).

Strategies on the mobile platforms are truly a genre all their own, not really comparable to strategies like Starcraft or, a favorite of mine, Age of Empires (classic, right!?!). Going so far as to say that they are easier may incur the wrath of the masses, but mobile strategies have a certain… shall I say simplicity?

Defender Chronicles II: Heroes of Athelia attempts to fill the shoes of the big strategy titles and does so modestly (and cutely; think toddler clomping around in his father’s work boots). Only sequel to Defender Chronicles by Gimka Entertainment, Inc., which I have not experienced firsthand so risky comparisons will be avoided, Heroes of Athelia follows four heroes fighting off evil across a multitude of diverse levels, inviting you to try every combination that enters your mind and find out which units you favor. I quickly learned that regardless of my own preferences, every unit has a use.

The game starts off slow with a great learning curve allowing for those new to the genre to adapt to this style. Immediately as the first battle begins, a neat tutorial introduces players as to how they should go about setting up their units in their ultimate, masterminded strategy. There are, of course, many upgrades and an expansive inventory to assist you along the way as well as four different heroes that make each battle just a little bit different than the next.

The overarching story is also incredibly interesting and woven into the battles allowing for a game that stands on its own two feet as a complete package. The miniscule criticism this reviewer does have is aimed at the speed adjustments that can be used for gameplay of which there are two. While in the beginning, normal was great for learning, double quickly became my default speed. There were times that I would have to wait to do more upgrading perhaps necessitating a third, even faster speed.

The characters in the game are well drawn and fit the theme of the title, reminiscent of Fire Emblem. They fit into the stages on which the skirmishes take place spectacularly. In addition, at the end of each fight, a short comic highlights something that happened showing the time and effort the creators took into polishing every nook and cranny of this game.
The music in the game is nice, but nothing that really stands out from the crowd. Rather, it is the voice acting in the game that jumps out at the player. Mobile games are not known for their dialog and the intros to each battle, while short, are well done.

The challenge of this game is enticing, always luring you back to attain perfection on that one fight trying as many combinations of troops and heroes as possible, which are nigh infinite. With easy controls that can be hit one-handed even while standing in the supermarket line, Defender Chronicles II, quickly became my go-to game to get a strategy fix on the go (I even took a deadline extension to review it).

Defender Chronicles II: Heroes of Athelia can be downloaded from the App Store for only $2.99.
