Dead Space 3

Dead Space 3 is available now for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC.

EA and developer Visceral Games has released the highly-anticipated third-person survival-horror shooter. The Dead Space series is widely considered to be one of the most scary game franchises ever.

Dead Space 3 follows series protagonist Isaac Clark as he attempts to find answers to the mystery surrounding a 200-year old infestation of Necromorphs on the forgotten planet of Tau Volantis. Joining him in his efforts is Sgt. John Carver.

The latest installment of the series introduces co-op play. Many fans have wondered if adding a second character would reduce the game’s fear factor. Dead Space 3 also includes support for Kinect, which can detect when a user curses at the game.

The game is the first Dead Space title since Dead Space 2 debuted in January 2011. The first Dead Space released in 2008 when Visceral Games was still known as EA Redwood Shores. Both previous games in the Dead Space trilogy have received positive critical reception.

Aside from the main trilogy, Dead Space has inspired two spin-off games. Dead Space: Extraction released in 2009 for Nintendo Wii. Two years later, the game made its way to the PS3 as part of a Dead Space 2 limited edition package. The prequel to the original Dead Space took advantage of motion controls for the Wii and Move for PS3. Although it did not have the same success as Dead Space, Extraction was well-received.

Dead Space Ignition was an action puzzle title that released in 2010 on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. The game took place during the events between Dead Space and Dead Space 2. Unlike other games in the franchise, Ignition was subject to poor reviews upon release.

The Dead Space series has also sparked comic book, novel and animated film adaptations.

Dead Space 3 is available at retailers for $59.99.
