The game picks up the story of the four survivors from the previous title. They are joined by a fifth character new to the series who will introduce a new skill set to the squad.
For those who have yet to play the original title, the next sentence contains spoilers. The group was last seen fleeing the zombie-infested resort island of Banoi in a helicopter. After landing on a military ship, the crew thought they were safe. Of course, they were not. A vicious storm hits and the infection has spread among the crew. The crashing waves and all-new infestation taking place aboard the ship force the crew to take refuge on the island of Palanai.
The island is vastly different from the one found in the first Dead Island. The monsoon will be a major factor in the game as it has hit the island hard. Flooding in the city of Henderson and throughout the jungle island has left boats as the only way of transportation. Towns have been thrown completely underwater and zombies lurk everywhere. Dynamic weather conditions will force the survivors to adept to varying visibility conditions.
Players will have to work together and combine the unique skills and abilities of each character to survive in the new setting against terrible new zombie mutations.
Dead Island Riptide will feature new co-op hub defense missions. The new mode mixes tower defense strategy into the game a la Gears of War’s Horde Mode. Teams will have to help humans who are surviving in sanctuaries. Players must strategically place traps, fences and turrets throughout a map to defeat waves of zombies and protect human strongholds.
Co-op play will also include brand new communication features, allowing gamers to have a much more intense and strategic team experience.
The latest installment to the series will feature the same leveling system as the original. Killing zombies will net players experience points, which players can then use to acquire new skills and abilities.
Dead Island released last year to mostly positive reviews despite a hiccup with the PC version of the game. It has sold over 4 million units, which the developer attributes to the game’s co-op play.
Prepare to kill zombies in hundreds of ways again when Dead Island Riptide releases next year for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC.
