Cougar 700M eSports Gaming Mouse Review

Cougar 700M eSports Review

Cougar was founded in 2007 to create top gaming products. The latest result is the Cougar 700M eSports Laser Gaming Mouse, which has a long list of features. With such a competitive market, the 700M eSports has not only a list of promises to uphold, but a namesake.

Build Quality

The Cougar 700M eSports Gaming Mouse touts an impressive suite of high-end features, such as an aluminum chassis, 8200 DPI, a 32-bit onboard ARM processor, a 1ms response time, OMRON switches, 8 configurable buttons and an adjustable palm rest. The overall look of the mouse is dramatic and modern, with a feel similar to that of the Mad Catz R.A.T. The buttons feel precise and the wheel offers a good resistance when scrolling.

While the black offers a satin finish, the white unit we tested has a glossy surface, which feels lesser in quality than the other materials in use. There could be more aluminum in place, but the underlying skeleton keeps the construction rigid and stable. The braided cable with its gold-plated USB connector is a good size and feels extremely durable.

Tracking is smooth in all DPI settings, which no detectable jumping. Clicks have good resistance and feedback, and are completely customizable with Cougar’s UIX Device Management System. Onboard memory can store up to three profiles, so that the mouse can be taken on the go. The system is fairly straightforward and offers good options to those who play a handful of game types.

The adjustable palm rest works well and has tool-less operation, but the palm rests are not as stable as the rest of the package and tend to wobble under stress. It is regrettable as the swappable nature is not only good for personalization but also ergonomics. The mouse has an option to add four weights for weight adjustment, but the review unit did not come with any. The default weight is rather light, so those looking for a heftier mouse will have to look elsewhere, even with the added weights.

At $69.99, the 700M eSports skews on the higher end of gaming mice in terms of pricing. With so many other options at or below the price point, it’s more of a personal preference of whether industrial design tops straightline performance. The list is long, but not all features proved to be in the 700M’s favor. Hardware features seem focused on FPS players, and other products have specialized builds for RTS, MMO and MOBA players, meaning the application is more specialized than Cougar would have you believe. It is difficult to recommend to all gamers alike.

The Cougar 700M eSports Laser Gaming Mouse has an impressive list of features, but the mouse is less than the sum of its parts. Impressive design and a few good ideas don’t materialize into the gaming mouse it could be. Still, the basic operations work well if not for a small letdown with the adjustable palm rest. For the money, there are myriad options with the same if not more customization.

Gaming Illustrated RATING

A crowded arena with cheaper options doesn't help the 700M, but the list of features helps to elevate it to the top of the list. There's more form than function in this one.

A mix of cheap and premium materials doesn't mesh well, and the wobbly palm rest was disappointing.

Some small shortcomings keep this from being in the top scorers, but the sensor and switches operate flawlessly.
