Cooler Master NotePal X3 Review

CoolerMaster NotePal X3 FeaturesThe first thing you’ll notice is the design and how wide the unit is, designed to accommodate even the behemoth 17″ gaming laptops, like the one I have. There’s also a gigantic 200mm fan that sits under a metal mesh base designed to keep things as cool as possible. On the side, you’ll notice on/off buttons for both the LED and the Fan, plus a slider control for the fan speed. In addition, there’s the mini-usb jack that connects to your laptop to give the CoolerMaster NotePal X3 power, with the handy “USB Out” port so you don’t lose a USB slot for this device.
The NotePal X3 also leverages a noticeable aerodynamic design that is purported to enhance cooling by up to 20% when compared to no cooling pad. Another handy feature is that there’s a front vent that provides a nice little breeze for your hands and wrists, adding to the smart design. As mentioned before, there’s an LED light to add some special flair. The unit is also angled and can be adjusted to give you just the right ergonomic feel to assist in allowing you to play longer with less wrist pain.
I was curious to know how long it would take me to open the box for the first time and get through a complete installation. I’ll just say it was literally under 60 seconds total. Open the box, place the NotePal X3 on your desk, place your laptop on top of it, plug in the laptop-to-X3 USB cable and turn on your laptop. Congrats, you’re done. Now you can “configure” the device to run as you like it, with the fan on or off (duh! turn it on!), LED on/off and set the fan speed. Overall, anyone who owns a laptop will be able to set this up with ease.
PerformanceAs someone that owns a robust 17″ gaming laptop that gets quite hot when I play some games, using a cooling device is something I advocate quite often to other gaming laptop owners. While I’ve tried out a few, none really approached the level of comfort, style and overall cooling performance the CoolerMaster NotePal X3 approached. First, the design is perfect, it looks amazing and the vents in the front are just brilliant. I loved that it was adjustable to give me just the right angle I wanted at any given moment and it wasn’t “too much” in terms of how it looked. Second, the cooling was really notecable. After running the laptop and playing Skyrim, GTA IV and StarCraft II over the course of an hour, I didn’t notice any temperature increase at all. Before, the bottom of the laptop would be quite warm to the touch. Now … nada. Of course, this is with the fan turned up all the way, but that’s really the point of having this – to maximize cooling ability to keep your laptop healthy.
The LED is a nice little addition but frankly, serves no purpose. For me and my mammoth laptop, it covered the LED completely and having it on didn’t do anything at all. Even with all the lights turned off, you could barely tell there was an LED. With a smaller 14-15″ laptop it’d probably be more noticable but again it’s one of those things that isn’t a major reason for purchasing the unit.
In terms of noise, the fan is pretty quiet even on fully blast and if you are gaming at any reasonable sound level, you’ll absolutely not hear it at all. This might be totally subjective, but I was expecting something a lot louder than what I heard when using the unit. Plus, it’s totally adjustable so you could reduce the speed, and thus, the noise level it produces.
Compared to the other laptop coolers I’ve owned, the CoolerMaster NotePal X3 is bar none the best I’ve used. Where others didn’t give an exciting design, didn’t fit laptops nicely nor did much in terms of cooling, this unit excelled in all those categories. It took no time to set it up and the performance was great. This device runs for $33.99 on Amazon which is a little higher than the competition, but that’s very understandable (and reasonable) after using it. Overall, the CoolerMaster NotePal X3 laptop cooling pad is everything it was hyped up to be and comes highly recommended for purchase.
