The extras on the DVD aren’t all that great – there’s only a quick three minute discussion with Ted Danson, and the rest of the “extras” are nice little highlight clips put together for viewing pleasure.
Overall Assessment:
In this reviewer’s opinion, Cheers is the funniest comedy ever to hit television. Despite being first aired in 1982, the comedy is still relevant, funny, and witty. This type of comedy hasn’t gotten old, and won’t get old – unlike a lot of television shows we watched during the 80s and 90s. Cheers is truly a timeless classic, and for anyone that loved this show, there’s no doubt they’ll be satisfied with this DVD set.
The only negative with this DVD set is the lack of insight and extras. The episodes are all there and they look and sound fantastic. Sadly, only one interview with Ted Danson is the only inside look at the first season. I’m sure between all the legal red tape, that’s probably all that could be done at this point.
The episodes themselves in the first season are awesome. Cheers, when it debuted, was the lowest rated television show in the history of NBC. Producers stuck with it, and through a bizarre set of circumstances, the show continued to air despite it’s bottom level ratings. Through word of mouth, and finally TV Guide’s featured article, “The Best Show You’re Not Watching” and eventually when aired after “The Cosby Show” – Cheers became a national hit. This first season saw some fantastic moments and hilarious episodes that Cheers fans and people everywhere will love. There’s no denying that this DVD set is an absolute must own – especially considering the price tag of $39.99 retail.
