Channer’s Gaming Rant – July 1st 2011

/ Jul 3rd, 2011 No Comments

I’m still recovering from E3, but there is still much to absorb from the event and a lot of interesting gaming news that has broken in the past few weeks. Duke Nukem Forever seems to have fallen from grace with fans, StarCraft 2 shows off a teaser trailer for its next expansion pack, video games sales were down, and courts says yes to kids getting violent games. Lets go over it shall we:

Duke Nukem Forever

We didn’t get a chance to see this title at E3, but we just released the DNF review which didn’t exactly receive a great score.Back during the days when first person shooters were relatively new, Duke Nukem was the leader, the pioneer, the new kid on the block that kicked ass and took names – and we all loved it. Fast forward a decade and a half, he’s now the macarena of FPS, with cheesy jokes and an attitude that leaves wondering if whether Duke has to pay for sex with that attitude. We got a game with cheesy graphics and even poorer presentation and fans are left to think, “Wait what just happened?!”.

Bad Month for Gaming Sales

May was not kind to the gaming industry but June showed a lot of improvement for Nintendo as the DS and Wii sales dominated, probably due curious gamers wanting to catch on to the Ocarina of Time (probably the greatest game ever made) and a lack of interesting titles for the Xbox and PS3. Although forecasts are solid for next year, we’re left wondering why this year seems to be sagging so much.

Getting ready for the holidays, Xbox 360 owners?

Seems like we might have to wait till Thanksgiving to get our serious game on. But it’s not to say there are some titles that can be pressed in the meantime as we wait. Trenched is getting nice reviews and for Mech games, which have disappointed from the start, it’s nice to see one that can entertain us. This game gives you the option of going Kurt Russell circa escape from NY on mobs or going strategy and watching you master plan help you take out your opponents. Its a nice transition and I recommend a lot of you to check this bad boy out.

PS3 – Step your game up?

After checking out Assassins Creed Revelations during E3, I was excited about what the PS3 had to offer this year. But looking at their release dates list I quickly got brought back to Earth. But there are some nice titles coming out soon with Uncharted, Batman Arkham City and Mass Effect 3. PlayStation 3 still seems to have trouble getting over that last hurdle to establish itself as the system above all others like it was in the late 1990s. But PS3 owners can be proud of the nice assortment of games coming out in the next few months … you just have to hold tight.

Gaming vs Congress?

Well not really, but the recent ruling disallowing gaming retailers from selling violent games to minors offers one set of advice – Watch your kids and monitor the games they play. I hate getting online in Halo 3 with some noisy 17 year old with emotional problems who vents, cries and whines when he gets killed and blames the rest of the world for it. But who cares – we all deal with it, we get past it. But that’s also some of the fun with gaming online, you might run into that one player whose a betrayal or a loss away from throwing his controller on the ground, stomping out of his room and coming back in a bunny costume cause it makes him feel better with he plays. Who wouldn’t want to share that story 10 years from now… In the end though parents are responsible for watching what kids buy. Cause the last thing we want to do is discipline random kids online who don’t know any better and take em to school when their folks should have to being with.

Anyway that’s my rant for now. Peace out.
