Channer Gaming Rant – April 2nd 2012 Edition

Associate Editor Carl Armstrong riffs on Minecraft, The Secret World, Mists of Pandaria and eGaming in this edition of his weekly gaming rant.

Ok folks, so the past couple of weeks are been chaotic for me, I switched full-time jobs and left a lot of good people behind at my previous employer, I’m a sentimental kind of guy so there were some moments and goodbyes that got to me. Was it all comparable to losing characters in Mass Effect and/or the ending? Well, no, but things have been busy for me but that doesn’t mean things didn’t stop happening in the gaming world recently, so enough bitching.

Minecraft to XBLA

Minecraft to XBLA

Minecraft builds a release date

The beloved PC game that go so much attention and spawned more YouTube videos then one could count is coming out May 9 for the XBLA. I’m curious to see how it does on consoles since it grew such a following on PC. I’m not sure it will translate all that well, should I go out on a limb and say the PC community has a little more imagination and more tools to use this game as compared to console users? Also lets not forget Trials Evolution, Fable Heroes, and Bloodforge.

The Secret World

The Secret World

The Secret World ( not of Nymph ) Character progression generating buzz

I’ve been checking out this game “The Secret World” since the hype machine started generating steam the past few weeks and the recent character builds and progressions have the makings for a unique and possibly revolutionary experience. While it reminds me of Skyrim taking place in modern times, the game is online and the fact that you can possibly learn every possible spell in the game and use different builds sounds promising.

Mists of Panda Express

The new expansion for WoW began beta testing and it seems the more WOW continues the more it seems that players are 50/50 about it and we all know that early reception for the expansion were panned and met with steep criticism. Blizzard claims that this expansion will bring WoW back to the days of Vanilla, where the Alliance and Horde threw down old school style, where exploration and PVP all over Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdom were the focus, instead of world uniting goals and plots dominating the story. We’ll see, I quit WoW last January and have no intention of coming back, hopefully for those who stayed this expansion will keep em busy.

MLG / eSports

GSTL=Respect!! – There are so many pro gaming leagues out there it’s sometimes hard to count, we know who the big boys are, GSL, MLG, SPL but the GSTL is drawing up quite a following in the States. If I were to put it simply, the GSL, is basically the NFL, with MLG and SPL being kind of the AFL before the merger, and I could go on. The GSTL is now becoming the farm system for competitive gaming, new players can hone in skills, players like DongRaeGus and MMA can make a name for themselves and older gamers who might have lost a step, get back to their winning ways and return to the gridiron of the GSL.

Get ready for Dreamhack!

The Largest LAN in the world which used to happen just twice a year will kick off its tour and locations have been announced, starting in Stockholm on April 21-22. Tix go on sale on March 27th and I would love to hit this event up once in my life, much more exciting the NFL press conferences. Plenty of eSports tournaments will also be held there for SC2, Counter-Stirke, and Super Street Fight 4 between this event and their Winter Grand Final event in November. If your not familiar with it here’s highlights from last season and if you don’t know how effing huge this event is … You’re welcome..

MLG vs NFL

MLG will be in Columbus Ohio March 23-25, I only say NFL because I can’t forget last year around this time right around the NFL draft, Husky starcraft pointed out that there was an article in Forbes Magazine where they interviewed a player and he mentioned how last year’s event in Ohio garnered 24 million internet views vs 16 million for the NFL draft. We all know how big the NFL draft is. That just shows you where eSports is. That being said I’m interesting in seeing the numbers for this years draft vs the Ohio MLG event. Can’t wait. I hope I can find that article to back up my statement. Hopefully next week.

Okay, I’m out of breath, I’ve had Operation Raccoon city for the past few days and haven’t had the chance to throw down yet. Look for my Darkness and SSX reviews soon. Oh also, the Walking Dead, GREAT finally, discuss.

Now BEAT IT !!!
