Features
[adsense250itp]The Genius HS-G700V CAVINMANUS headset has a driver unit dimension of 40mm and a frequency respons of 20Hz~20Khz. The impedance is 32ohm and the sensitivity is 96bD. The cable length is 2.5 meters, which is about 8 feet if you are from the USA. This piece of hardware is considered a headset and not headphones because of the inclusion of the microphone. When the mic is in the up position, it auto-mutes which is pretty convenient over having to hit some button in the middle of a session. The microphone has a sensitivity of -39+/-3 dB and is Uni-directional with a frequency response of 100Hz~10Khz.
The unit sports a “Virtual 7.1 Channel Gaming Experience” which can be toggled on or off with the included driver and app package. There’s also a vibration feature which can be turned on or off with the press of a small button on the left earpiece. The final major feature of the headset is that this utilizes a anti-corrosive gold-plated USB jack to leverage the higher echelon quality and stablity a USB-headset could provide over legacy technology such as a stereo and mic jack.
Included in the package is the headset, a driver mini-disc and a multi-language support/troubleshooting document.
Installation
From beginning to end, including configuration of levels/software, the installation process should take you no more than 10 minutes. Plug in the headset via a USB port, pop in the drivers and you are ready to rock. The quality of the headset is pretty obvious from the time you take it out of the package, which I must add is pretty nice packaging and looks quite handsome prior to being opened. That aside, the headset feels legit and the cable quality looks outstanding, especially considering the gold-plated USB plug that will go into your port.Once you’ve mastered plugging in a USB device into your computer/monitor/port (6 seconds?), you’ll definitely want to dive into the configuration software. As-is you won’t get near the rich tones you could if you spend 5-7 minutes configuring the headset. The Virtual 7.1 was decently pulled off but felt more like a gimmick than anything and when compared to the quality of just the regular headset setting seemed more like a cheap thrill. After a little experimentation we found that setting it as a 2-piece headset and changing the mixer to the “jazz” setting (there’s a bunch of preset ones you can mess with or just do your own) you’ll get some amazing quality. Again, this whole process took about 10 minutes and was pretty painless.
CAVIMANUS Performance in Game Play
Coming from an old set of Sennheisers that I really loved, I’ve been skeptical of getting a USB-powered headset from a non-Audiophile company because I simply didn’t trust I could get the same richness and clarity of sound I was accustomed to. Well, those fears are totally gone the second I loaded up a few of my favorite PC games. The quality of the sound in games like Skyrim and Diablo III exceeded any headphone or headset experience I had ever had in my long (I’m old in gamer years) career in the industry. While I don’t have dozens of headsets to compare it to, I don’t need to in order to know that playing a game with these on is simply bad-ass. There’s a dial on the left ear that allows you to increase the volume and trust me when I tell you these guys can get l-o-u-d. When coupled with the vibration feature (not a gimmick btw, definitely legit and added a “fun” element when gaming), the quality and volume of sound really made me feel that these really were truly intended to rest on a gamer’s head and nobody else’s.
When it comes down to it when playing PC games, the CAVIMANUS headset is most importantly comfortable as all heck. One thing I regularly preach to other games is simple fact that anything I’m going to put on my head must be comfortable. If it’s not comfortable, who cares how great it sounds, right? Right! Fortunately, these felt soft at the top thanks to a healthy amount of quality padding. Around the ears there’s plenty of room to let them breathe and putting in a 2-3 hour gaming session didn’t require me to take off these even once.
Finally, when it comes to the microphone quality, it’s pretty darn good. I’ve had a few Skype sessions with them on as well as recorded a few tutorial videos and the quality has been very solid and doesn’t sound like a headset mic but more of a nice mid-range podcasting mic which definitely exceeds the norm of what you find these days with gaming headsets.
CAVIMANUS Performance with Music
I’ve ripped some of my favorite “super remastered gold collection” CDs to FLAC quality and I have to say they sounded amazing. I was probably most concerned about these performing well when it came to music because the old ones I had were perfectly attuned to just the way I like to listen to the likes of U2, The Killers and Led Zeppelin. This time around those bands still sounded great as before, but other bands I love like Metallica simply never sounded better with a headset (I can’t lie – hearing them live is better obviously!). The deep and thunderous bass just took that whole heavy metal experience to a new level. Trust me when I tell you there’s nothing like listening to “Ride the Lightning” or “Blackened” with the CAVIMANUS headset while grinding dungeons in Skyrim.
Overall Impressions
Overall, I really wasn’t sure what I was going to get myself into with the Genius HS-G700V CAVIMANUS Headset but I know where I’m now going with it – they sit permanently attached to my gaming rig and are going nowhere. I genuinely love this gaming headset and it’s really a well made piece of hardware that gamers should invest the (MSRP) $79.99 in if they want to take their PC gaming experience to a new level. The quality of the gaming sound was amazing and the playback of high-end music was phenominal. While the only drawback was finding out the Virtual 7.1 surround sound wasn’t to my personal liking, all other aspects of this headset came through to my liking with flying colors. This headset comes highly recommended.
