Upcoming Castlevania Game for 3DS Delayed

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate

Konami has revealed Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate will be delayed for another year instead of being released this Fall. The game is being created exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS handheld gaming system and is under development by Mercury Stream. The developer was also in charge of developing Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, which was released in 2010.

Revealed to take place a whopping 25 years after Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Mirror of Fate is a continuation of the story of that game and of members of the Belmont clan. This time  it will focus on the exploits of two of the most well-known heroes of the Castlevania universe:  Simon and Trevor Belmont. Both characters are direct descendants of Gabriel Belmont, the hero of the previous game who fought Dracula.

Dave Cox, head of product planning and game producer for Konami, revealed the game will serve as a prelude for the upcoming Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, which is also planned for a release in 2013 for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate aims to bridge the storyline to Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2.  Both titles will reveal the shocking fate of the Belmont Clan in a dramatic culmination of the Lords of Shadow franchise.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 two years ago to generally favorable reviews. Despite its relatively warm reception, it also polarized fans with its change of direction, rebooting the long standing fictional universe, and adopting a new gameplay format different from previous games in the series. For better or for worse, Konami desires to maintain this direction and has no intention of returning to the original continuity or style. This will irk some fans who enjoyed the original formula of the games before but  at the same time appease those who want to see the series progress forward rather than languish in the past.

For the latter, or for anyone who enjoyed Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and hopes to continue playing in the rebooted universe and format that that game introduced to the public, the wait to wield whips against the hordes of the night once again will be a little longer.
