Zen Studios announced this week that their popular tower defense title, CastleStorm, will release on the Wii U eShop Dec. 26. CastleStorm released Nov. 5 on the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita and originally released in May on the Xbox 360.
The Wii U version of CastleStorm will fully utilize the Wii U’s GamePad. The game will be playable on the Wii U GamePad without a TV. CastleStorm will also be playable in local multiplayer due to the added GamePad functionality. One gamer can use the Pro Controller with their TV while the other can battle it out on the GamePad.
CastleStorm will hit the Wii U eShop on Dec. 26 and will retail for $9.99. Two sets of DLC have been previously released for the game on PSN, Xbox LIVE and Steam. From Outcast to Savior and The Warrior Queen add new campaigns, new levels, new weapons, a new troop class and new achievements.[adsense250itp]
Quick Take
CastleStorm’s use of the Wii U’s GamePad for increased functionality in the game is good news. Next-generation consoles brought next generation controllers and it seems like many developers are struggling to find uses for additional buttons and touchpads. It will probably be a while before gamers start regularly using those extra buttons and their use will likely coincide with larger game franchises creating a solid use for them. In the meantime, small developers are paving the way.
