Nazi Zombies, Call of Duty: WWII’s cooperative Zombies mode, made its debut at San Diego Comic Con today.
Call of Duty: WWII is being developed by Sledgehammer Games, who are also responsible for heading development on Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
Zombies mode was first introduced by Treyarch in Call of Duty: World at War. In the mode, players take on increasingly difficult waves of zombies while collecting perks and earning weapon upgrades. Since its inception Zombies has grown in popularity and been seen in multiple Call of Duty games since. Sledgehammer Games brought the mode to Advanced Warfare with the Exo Zombies DLC.
Nazi Zombies will take a more horror-oriented approach than previous tongue-in-cheek installments. Staying with the World War II theme of the newest Call of Duty entry, players will be taken to into a dark world of occult Nazi zombies experiments in Mittelburg, a snowy Bavarian village in Germany.
Players take on the roles of a group of international art experts from the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives Section (MFAA) as they try to recover priceless works of art that were stolen by the Axis powers. Of course, things go awry as the village holds an evil secret that will unleash horrors onto the team. Celebrities David Tennant, Elodie Yung, Katheryn Winnick, Udo Kier, and Ving Rhames will lend their talents to the game’s cast of characters.
“With Nazi Zombies, we’re creating a frightening world full of terrifying characters and events that will make you jump and look over your shoulder,” said Glen Schofield, Studio Head and Co-founder of Sledgehammer Games. “There’s an incredible amount of myth and lore, which our team has poured through in our development. This is unlike anything before, we’re taking players to some very dark, grim places in Nazi Zombies. This is one hell of a horror experience.”
Schofield and fellow Sledgehammer Co-founder Michael Condrey previously worked on the original Dead Space. The two are using their experience in horror games to bring something new and terrifying to Call of Duty’s diverse Zombies mode.
Call of Duty: WWII launches on Nov. 3 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
