Blizzard Entertainment announced its latest game, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. It will release for PC, Mac and iPad.

The game was unveiled at a panel held by Blizzard at last week’s PAX East. No definite release date has been announced but it is expected to come out sometime this year.

Hearthstone will be a free-to-play strategy card game set in the famous Warcraft game universe and based upon the popular World of Warcraft trading card game. Players will battle with custom card decks which can be made from more than three hundred cards. Each varies in purpose and rarity and allows players to cast powerful spells, wield various weapons and get aid from other characters. Cards can be earned by winning battles or by purchasing packs composed of five random cards through Battle.net, Blizzard’s official game server. New cards can even be made using a unique crafting system.

Three modes have been revealed, including Practice Mode, Play Mode and The Forge. Practice mode enables players to battle the computer to hone their skills before taking on human players. In Play Mode, gamers battle others in traditional head-to-head action for fun and to get higher medal rankings. The Forge challenges players to construct a deck in every new fight from a select set of cards and use the deck to defeat other participants. In all modes, players have the chance to obtain more cards to boost the strength of their deck.

Blizzard is designing the game to be as simple and easy to play as possible. They hope it will appeal to a broad range of gamers.

“We’ve always loved collectible card games at Blizzard, so it’s been exciting to bring everything we love about the genre to life in Hearthstone,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment in a press release. “We’re putting a lot of focus into creating a fun new game that’s easy to pick up and play, but also has a lot of depth. We can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

Signups for the beta are now being accepted at the game’s official website. Interested gamers are encouraged to register using Battle.net. Testing is scheduled to start sometime this summer.
