Blizzard Announces First Diablo 3 Expansion, Reaper of Souls

/ Aug 21st, 2013 No Comments

Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls

Reaper of Souls will be the first expansion to Diablo 3, revealed Blizzard at Gamescom.

Reaper of Souls will begin a new chapter in the Diablo saga and mankind’s fight against the titular Prime Evil. Malthael, the fallen Archangel of Wisdom returns for the first time since the end of Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction. Malthael, now the Angel of Death, has seized the Black Soulstone which contains the essence of Diablo. Continuing as the fifth act of Diablo 3, players must locate Malthael and defeat him before he unleashes destruction upon the world.

Blizzard revealed that expansion will add a new character class – the Crusader – making for a total of six playable heroes in Diablo 3. The Crusader is described as a walking tank who is driven by a quest to cleanse the corruption throughout the Zakarum faith. Wearing heavy armor and wielding a wide range of weapons, the Crusader uses magic to strengthen allies and weaken foes. Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard said “Diablo has always been about the struggle between good and evil, and Reaper of Souls explores the darker notes of that conflict.” The expansion will also introduce new locations from the city of Westmarch to the ancient Pandemonium Fortress.

Diablo 3’s gameplay will also receive a large amount of additions with the expansion. Reaper of Souls will increase the level cap to 70 and any players continuing with their previous heroes will gain new spells and abilities as they level up. A larger emphasis is being placed on randomized environments along with new quests and monsters. The loot system will receive an upgrade with new and improved Legendary items, new Blacksmith and Jeweler crafting options and more. The Paragon system is also being upgraded to allow for more end-game replayability. Two new game modes will be added in the form of Loot Runs and Nephalem Trials to provide additional challenges to players outside the main story.

Playable on the Gamescom show floor, Reaper of Souls will be arriving in 2014. Further details about the expansion will be available at BlizzCon and as development continues. No word on if Reaper of Souls will be exclusive to PC and Macs or if it will also arrive on consoles.

Diablo 3 will be available on the PS3 and Xbox 360 on Sept. 3.
