Black Ops 2’s Multiplayer Strikes a New Chord

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 may have avoided the complaints of a yearly update. Everyone complains about the iPhone’s frequent updates, which are actually more like a new $400 phone. Everyone complains about Madden lacking quality change. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’s multiplayer is the same old jazz, and exactly what comes to mind when you think of any other Call of Duty game. With the exception of Halo, Crysis, and Borderlands, first-person shooters tend to have trouble with originality, and Black Ops II does not do anything to change the stereotype that all FPS are the same. Treyarch and Infinity Ward’s Jekyll and Hyde act is, in reality, just the Olsen Twins at Activision’s Halloween party. They have two different identities and personalities, but a person wouldn’t tell the two apart at first glance. That being said, the multiplayer on Call of Duty: Black Ops II is simply amazing. Rather than try to teach their old dog new tricks, Treyarch just put some make up on the dog, rearranged the obstacle course, and traveled to the future.
[adsense250itp]The most instantly noticeable improvement made to the two big FPS titles of the year, Halo and CoD, are in the graphic department. Outside of the single player campaign, Call of Duty is not known for having stunning graphics; in fact, they haven’t had good graphics since Call of Duty 2: Big Red One on Xbox 360. Call of Duty: Black Ops II, however, has pretty good graphics. The realism is still lacking, largely in part to the cartoony animations and art, but the interface is much cleaner than in past games. By no means are the graphics in Black Ops II anything to brag about, but when a person goes from making Jack’s to DiGiorno (for all those gamers who know their Take-N-Bake pizzas) it is notable. The graphics are improved, but the shot placement is as disappointing as ever. It’s good to finally be able to say that seeing the enemy was not the issue, but now a person can see clearly that a bullet should have, but didn’t, shoot the person in the proper area or at all. Don’t let that be a detouring factor, however. There is still the slim possibility that it will be fixed in an update.
There is not a single multiplayer map that cannot be compared to a multiplayer map in Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, or Black Ops, but they all feel… better. Now, most of this information comes from this Chad Whitney guy, and he may be slightly bias because this is the first Call of Duty game he is actually good at, but rest assured… Black Ops II has some pretty sweet multiplayer maps. Some of the maps are small, which may seem cool, but everything changes with Spawn Camping, waiting in the enemy respawn area to get cheap kills. Between spawn campers and traditional campers, the maps can get pretty frustrating, whether big or small. The maps are fun and unique though. At the start of a match a player may realize that they are reminded of a past Call of Duty map, but that feeling fades after the player has time to familiarize themselves with the maps and get engaged in the nonstop action.
The most significant jump that Treyarch made was their jump to the future. Until recently, Infinity Ward had exclusive rights to use of Post-WWII guns and technology, but after paying a hefty sum Treyarch was able to breach that contract. This was a fantastic idea because it allowed a combination of what made Modern Warfare excel and the things that fans of Black Ops liked. Treyarch currently has the upper hand in the Activision Civil War that is the Call of Duty franchise. As Modern Warfare 2 set itself apart from other Call of Duty titles, so does Black Ops II. This is the perfect game to grab some Dew, a pizza, and marathon some Black Ops II.
