BioWare lifted the veil off its latest game at gamescom, Shadow Realms. The game is a 4v1 story-driven online action RPG for the PC, in development at BioWare Austin.
Shadow Realms pits four heroes against an evil foe. This enemy is called The Shadowlord and is controlled by another player. The four heroes fight in co-op missions against The Shadowlord leading to dynamic gameplay scenarios ensuring new battles every time. Players can choose to play as heroes or The Shadowlord and earn experience on both good and evil sides.
[adsense250itp]The story in Shadow Realms plays out episodically like a TV series, certain adventure games or even Guild Wars 2’s Living World. BioWare wants to deliver the story in this manner so players can experience the story-driven game as a community.
Players will explore an evolving world where modern elements meet fantasy. Modern Heroes on Earth are awakened with magical powers they never knew they possessed. These heroes are recruited by members of the Radiant Empires to fight in a war against the Shadow Legions of Embra.
The Shadow Legions have warred against the Radiant Empire for years and recently have gained a new strength with the coming of the Shadowlords. This fierce enemy has learned how to leave Embra and invade Earth prompting the need of new heroes to join the fight.
Shadow Realms allows players to enjoy deep character and combat combinations as they choose to fight alongside three other Heroes or as The Shadowlord. The game features six Hero classes including Warrior, Assassin, Wizard, Cleric, Ranger and Warlock and the singular Shadowlord class. Players can customize characters from a wide range of abilities that can be mixed regardless of class.
Players can visit the official Shadow Realms website to sign up to get into the closed alpha.
This is not quite the announcement people expected BioWare to make, yet a new game from BioWare Austin is not too shabby. The whole 4v1 concept is becoming the new open-world/roguelike chic trend for game development but Shadow Realms’ modern-meets-fantasy premise is promising. The true test for the game will be if playing as The Shadowlord is fun. We’ll see when the closed Alpha starts.
