Bad Boys II (DVD)
GI Staff / Dec 15th, 2003 No Comments
One of the year’s best action movies, better than the original, and packed full of exploding cars and chase scenes! This is a great movie for the guys, and is a perfect escape from the ordinary films making the rounds. Will Smith shines and Marty Lawrence whines – but the script keeps the pace up and the eye-popping effects are dy-no-mite!
Some special features, nothing "too" exciting…
Seven deleted scenes
Stunts and visual effects featurettes
Six sequence breakdowns, including on-the-set footage, storyboards, and scripts
19 production diary featurettes
Jay-Z "La-La-La" music video
Plot – we don’t need no stinking plot! Well, the plot is not real deep. Two Miami narcotics detectives Mike Lowrey (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) are on a team assigned to stop the import of designer-drug ecstasy into Miami. Seems a Super-Cuban Drug Lord, Tapia, played by Jordi Mollà, has a great scheme – drugs are brought into the US using boats that drop off caskets offshore – the caskets are picked up, drugs come out, money goes back to build his great mansion in Cuba. Predictably, for all Cuban drug lords are descended from Scarface, Tapia is a very mean spirited individual who merely wants to expand his empire and take control of Miami's narcotics, killing anyone who stands in his way (like the Russian mafia). This takes care of the first 40 minutes of the movie.
Some nice touches to the movie are in the details – where Director, Michael Bay, who incidentally directed THE ROCK and PEARL HARBOR, expertly choreographs a fast moving action film. This movie deserves an award for “originality with an automobile”… as the action chase scenes and demolition derby are flat out fantastic.
AUDIO & VIDEO QUALITY
Martin Lawrence is a fine comedic actor, does a good job in this movie, but he should beat the crap out of Shelton & Stahl for their writing him as a whining ninny. The Marcus character falls flat several times solely because of the writing… in fact, I would offer that Lawrence extends himself to keep the character interesting DESPITE the incredibly poor writing surrounding his character.
Will Smith solidifies his ability to carry an action picture – with a solid performance reminiscent of his mega-hit INDEPENDENCE DAY. Smith ought to be teamed with Spielberg and/or Lucas in a STAR WARS or INDIANA JONES type action-flick… Smith is better on screen than Harrison Ford and could take one of their movies into the $250M+.
BAD BOYS 2 is a great guy-flick and one of the year’s best pure entertainment and excitement values. This is a solid action movie, fast paced, and Lawrence and Smith sparkle on the screen. Producer Bruckheimer spared no expense and no car was spared in this big budget blockbuster that leaves you exhausted at the end. Great piece of work!
