Amiibo Will Unlock Portions of Classic Gameplay

A free app coming to Wii U this year will allow amiibo figurines to unlock portions of gameplay from classic NES and SNES, Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata announced during a financial briefing.
According to Iwata, players will be able to open the app on Wii U and tap an amiibo figurine on the NFC area of the GamePad to unlock “highlighted scenes” from NES and SNES games. This will not give players access to the entire game, but another tap of the amiibo on the GamePad will open another scene.
Further details have not been unveiled, but Iwata said gameplay will be under a time limit.
Nintendo announced its line of NFC figures at E3 2014. They have been wildly popular since releasing. Nintendo announced the company has shipped more than 5.7 million figurines, and Link has been the most popular selling amiibo around the world.
The free Wii U app is expected to be available during the first half of 2015. A new line of amiibo figures is expected to release alongside Mario Party 10 in March.
The amiibo line has been incredibly popular, so it makes sense that Nintendo will continue to find functionality for the figures. Expect more creative ways and content to come in the future, and more variations of popular Nintendo characters to be released as amiibos.
