AirBuccaneers HD

AirBuccaneers HD

Fire off the cannons, AirBuccaneers HD, following a long period of development by Finnish developer Ludocraft, has finally been released Wednesday  This ambitious multiplayer game can now be purchased from Steam.

Beginning as a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004 that was created for the Make Something Unreal Contest 2004, AirBuccaneers HD eventually transitioned into its own individual game which has, until now, been under an immense period of development. The game was aided, in part, by a loyal community that’s provided suggestions and feedback used to help sculpt the final version.

The game is set in a fantasy world known as the ancient North. Once a prosperous civilization, the ancient North has devolved from a state of peace to chaos caused by dark magic and inhabited by bandits who attack and pillage using great airships. The Buccaneers, a group of shaman-like folk, battle for supremacy against the marauding Vikings.

Picking from one or the other, players will fight against others in grand battles fought high in the air in huge environments. The goal is simple: destroy the opposing group. How you can accomplish this though, is up to players. Using one of four different kinds of airships, players are equipped with a number of different weapons from cannons to rockets that can be used to shoot down enemy airships. Enemy ships can also be boarded and taken over turning the tables on the opposition.

You begin the fight for the ancient North as a lowly soldier. As you do well in the game and win battles increasing in rank as you gain renown for your exploits. You can further distinguish your character by developing them to be a more able-bodied fighter by selecting from one of four specialization classes: Captain, Defender, Guerrilla and Cannoneer. Each class has their own unique abilities and skills. A perks and flaws system further defines your created character allowing them to have particular strengths counter-balanced with having specific weaknesses.

Players who expect to win the game alone won’t find this easy. There is a heavy emphasis on teamwork. From controlling the ship to manning its weapons, the only way players can hope to win is by working together as a team.

Sound like fun? Buy a copy from Steam and invite a few friends. After all how often is it do friends have an opportunity to play as sky Vikings and blast one another?
