By Crom! The virtual world of Age of Conan: Unchained is getting a little bigger thanks to new content. The game’s developer, Funcom, has announced that the popular MMORPG will be receiving a new expansion for its blood soaked game entitled Secrets of the Dragon’s Spine. No definite release date has been given beyond that the expansion will be released over time as a series of multiple updates that will start a few months from now.
“Our version of Hyboria has grown into a vast online world since we launched back in 2008,” says Craig Morrison, creative director at Funcom. “With the Secrets of the Dragon’s Spine update we are moving into an incredibly exciting part of Robert E. Howard’s work, and I think both Age of Conan players and fans of Howard’s work alike will find a lot to enjoy once they get to explore this new content.”
The content added to the game will chiefly include a huge new area located in the desert south and west of the city of Pteion. Funcom says the area will be “roughly the same size as the coast of Ardashir.” That means the location will be very expansive.
The area is mostly desert dunes with the exception of a small oasis located next to a mountain filled with tunnels and caverns. The chief building in the region will be the Palace of Cetriss, which can be found at the foot of the mountain. In true fantasy tradition, don’t expect this location and the landmarks in it to be just eye candy as Funcom is designing the area with level 80 players in mind. Whatever enemies or obstacles inhabit this place Funcom intends to make it challenging.
The new brand new area will also include a new mount type (exact details on it are still unannounced at the time of this article but will be linked to the backstory of the new area), a new player vs. area, a new raid area and new items, armor and weapons to acquire. There will be seven more dungeons to crawl around of which the names of three have been revealed as The Coils of Ubah Kan, The Sepulchral of the Wyrm and The Slithering Chaos.
The game is based upon the famed adventures of Conan the Cimmerian by Robert E. Howard in the Hyborean age, a fictional period of earth’s pre-history where all the continents of earth were once joined together. Age of Conan: Unchained takes place in the time after the fictional barbarian assumes the throne of the kingdom of Aquilonian. Players create their own characters and explore the fantasy world engaging in combat with other players, confronting ungodly creatures, collecting treasure, and surviving in a world where mercy is in short supply and kingdoms are in constant conflict.
Age of Conan: Unchained enjoyed great success upon its intial release as Age of Conan: Hyborean Adventures in 2008, selling 1.4 million copies worldwide. The game has evolved in both gameplay and name Anyone who enjoy the works of Robert E. Howard and wants to take part in a gritty and violent no-holds barred MMORPG that offers World of Warcraft some well needed competition are sure to enjoy the game. Age of Conan: Unchained is free to play with an even fuller experience given to players who subscribe to a monthly subscription.
The game client along with information about the game can be found at the game’s official site. If you’re up for it then grab a sword, give a battle cry and lob off some heads, it’ll make waiting for the updates more tolerable.
