Activision’s popular Skylanders’ franchise releases its latest entry, Skylanders: SWAP Force on Oct. 13. Fans can celebrate the upcoming release with various events in what Activision is dubbing, “SWAPtober”.
“SWAPtober” gives Skylanders enthusiasts plenty of opportunities to win copies of the upcoming SWAP Force game. During Oct. 1-31, Activision will give away Starter Packs of SWAP Force daily through the game’s official Twitter (@SkylandersGame).
[adsense250itp]To participate in the contest fans can go to the official Skylanders’ website, where they can start making combinations out of the various SWAP Force characters. In order to enter the contest, fans need to tweet their favorite SWAP Force character combo with the hashtags, #SWAPtober and #Skylanders. Doing so will enter them in the daily giveaways. Starter Packs will be available after the Oct. 13 launch.
Activision and Toys’R’Us partnered up to put on an event in Times Square on Oct. 10. This event dubbed, “SWAPtoberfest” gives New York City-based Skylanders addicts an opportunity to play the game before its retail release. Fans can participate in Skylanders-themed activities; take photos with Skylanders costumed charaters and possibly win SWAP Force Starter Packs or other Skylanders-themed merchandise from various companies.
Additionally, the Toys’R’Us Times Square location will host events in-store on Oct. 12 and 13 to celebrate the game’s launch. The in-store event gives fans chances to try out game demos and win giveaways (as supplies permit). As one of the “Fabulous 15” on the Toys’R’Us Holiday Hot Toy List, the company is giving fans of the series plenty of opportunities to celebrate the new Skylanders game.
Skylanders: SWAP Force releases on Oct. 13 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Wii U and 3DS. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of SWAP Force launch when the consoles do.
Our Take: Skylanders is a phenomenon. What seemed like a weird fad has shown some staying power as the series enters its third iteration (and inspired Disney to take a note out the toy playbook). What Activision showed off in the demo of the game at E3 seemed fun. The SWAP mechanic is neat and seems to work in the way kids like to interact with toys. Kids and older gamers alike find some affinity with the series, so it is cool to see Activision giving fans chances to win copies of the game and put on big events for the game. If anything, good on them for allowing kids to play around with the SWAP matches, and see how they work, before they invest in the figures come release day.
