5 Gruesome Monsters Lurking in The Evil Within’s New Trailer

Shinji Mikami and his team at Tango Gameworks are appropriately bringing a healthy dose of horror to gaming this month with The Evil Within. As detective Sebastian Castellanos, players will encounter a number of terrifying and difficult foes throughout the course of the game. To show players what they will be up against, Bethesda released a new trailer, titled “Fight for Life,” packed with monsters.
The game will be packed with creepy enemies of various forms. These five foes are the most gruesome enemies starring in the latest trailer for The Evil Within.
Laura is one of the monsters players will encounter several times throughout the game. Her long, black hair obscures her face while her extra limbs instill fear. The arachnid-like presence of Laura isn’t to be underestimated.
Players will have to use different strategies to fight off Laura. In the trailer, we see Laura take a bullet to the head only to teleport away in a burst of blood. Whether simply running away, using the environment as a weapon or going in guns blazing, there are certain tricks to avoid death by her pointy fingers.
The basic enemies of The Evil Within are referred to as “The Haunted,” and they come in many forms. Whether it’s bloated guys wielding axes, police officers with glowing eyes, a menacing person with half their face missing or some other ghastly sight, The Haunted are formidable opponents. And then there’s the guy we’ll refer to as Dollface.
Headshots always seem to be the best way to down monsters in horror games, right? Dollface laughs at the trope and enjoys being shot in the face since it will only chip away at his mask. Even worse, there’s something unnervingly menacing about that pristine, porcelain face surrounded by all the other types of Haunted. Best to burn it alive like the rest to make sure it’s dead.
Super Monster Dog
The Evil Within must have some sort of super strand of rabies out on the loose in its world. What else could explain the double dose this mutant dog received? Players have encountered “zombie” dogs before but this one takes the bone — all the ones from your body.
Capable of charging through walls, this dog towers over Sebastian and will likely be difficult to escape. Like many monsters in the game, the dog still retains the faintest bit of its identity before mutation.
Much of the trailer focuses on The Keeper, one of the game’s boss monsters. The Keeper wields a massive, spiked hammer and the harvested brains of his victims. If that doesn’t define gruesome, what does? To survive the stalking Keeper, players must run from danger while keeping an eye on the environment.
The Keeper throws out traps that will tangle Sebastian’s leg in barbed wire. Disabling these traps can be used to create bolts for the agony crossbow, which can deal massive damage to foes like The Keeper. Even after defeating The Keeper, the trailer shows its head springing to life and latching onto Sebastian.
Seriously, what is this thing?
A sickly, grey swarm of bodies and monsters with a giant fist. The final moments of the trailer show Sebastian fleeing for his life from this gruesome monstrosity only to be snatched up like a doll. Is it a nightmare made flesh? Some of the horrors from The Evil Within are only hinted at and it will be up to players to find the context and ultimately triumph over these terrifying beings.
The Evil Within launches for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC on Oct. 14.
